A back draft shutter/damper is used to create a one way valve for ventilation or exhaust systems, it allows air and moisture to flow out when your exhaust fan or range hood is on, but automatically shuts when the fan turns off to block outside wind, cold air, insects, and outdoor smells from coming back inside.
